As a technique to deepen the connection to our heart space, I recommend a practice called automatic writing. This involves writing without conscious thought, simply setting a timer or playing a song and letting words flow until the time is up. Merely allowing your hand to continue moving without pause.
Starting out can feel uncomfortable as the mind's perfectionistic tendencies seek to protect us. As an eternal editor, I've struggled with the raw and organic writing process, but this practice taps into a more vulnerable side.
You might find that what emerges feels disorganized or unpolished. For example, you could repeat words or overlook grammar rules. But don't worry—trust that these words carry a heartfelt message. Allow the mind to take a much-needed break from its relentless need for control. Of course, easier said than done!
My wife and I recently engaged in some writing exercises set to different instrumental tracks under 4 minutes. We'd write simultaneously and share our results, often amazed at overlapping themes evoked by the music.
Music is an incredible tool to elicit emotion and explore our true nature.
After writing, we'd read aloud and enjoy the poetry that emerged, even exploring edgier sides with louder, more provocative music.
Below is a snippet from our intuitive writing exercises inspired by the song "Aurora" by Christoffer Moe Ditlevsen and Karoliina Gabel, included for your listening pleasure.
Daniela:
Fill my heart with longing for the home that lies above and I am below.
Not able to reach far enough to touch you, my beloved land that I yearn to return to.
Travel light, back to the light, show me the way back to where I belong.
Deep inside these walls, hidden beneath the layers of my own soul I can see what I've lost.
I seek and search until I realize that this land I yearn for is within me.
Always within reach.
The stillness of the night, the stars, the illuminated path, all within my stillness.
Kristin:
Flowing along the river of my heart song, gliding against smooth mountain bases as we gently curve along this sweet ride.
Its smooth, luxurious waves feel delicate, lush and otherworldly.
How else shall we dance through emotion but in the softest, kindest way?
We enable the feeling to come forth, release and unburden us from our reality.
No stickiness, just buttery velvet motions of ease and grace.
If only emotions could be this beautiful to move through.
